How Likely Is It That I Will Get A Yeast Infection While On Antibiotics? How Can I Prevent This?

I have a bad case of strep throat. I got a perscription of antibiotics, plus 3 steroid pills I had to take all at once to make the swelling go down. I also am taking birth control pills. The doc says to take 3 antibiotic pills a day, morning, noon, and night. And they are kind of big pills. I’m really worried about getting a yeast infection. How likely is it that I will get one because of all these meds? What can I do to try and prevent this? Any tips?

Hi there. Well, really you should have asked the doctor if the antibiotic that she was giving you was one that was prone to causing a yeast infection. Some are much more likely to do that then others. Some doctors will just automatically give you something for a yeast infection so that you do not have to deal with it. If you do start showing signs of a yeast infection give this same doctor a phone call and tell her what is going on. There is a single pill that you can take that will take care of it.
I don’t think that any of the home remedies really work as efficiently as the pill does. It will zap a yeast infection before it even really gets going.
BTW, did the doctor mention that you might want to use a back up form of birth control while you are taking these antibiotics if you are taking birth control pills? Condoms will do the job. There again some antibiotics are more prone to doing this than others, the doctor should certainly have warned you. Better to be safe than sorry though!
Good luck and I hope everything works out just fine.
    Blessings

I can only offer a tip, eat a cup of yogurt every day. Its not legal for anyone but a doctor to give medical advice, especially not an herbalist like me!

any antibiotic or vitamin can give you this. try a yoghurt product called yakhult.
    it helps with bad bacteria

some women get yeast infections and some don’t. . it is impossible to say if you will or not. . go to the drug store and buy {over the counter} probiotics, same thing that is in yogurt, only stronger. . this is the good bacteria that fights the yeast infection. .

You can go to any pharmacy and get over the counter Monistat vaginal cream. (Generic is fine too) Try to get the 7 day cream and use it about two days into the antibiotics. It will not harm you at all if you DON’T have an infection. I’m kind of suprised your doctor didn’t prescribe this for you.

There is more than a good chance to kill the good bacteria in your G. I. system with a course of anti-biotics, that’s what anti-biotics do.
You can replenish your pro biotics with acidophlis from a natural food store.

I would say that it’s pretty likely that you’ll get a yeast infection, but you can take L-lysine. You can get it at any drug store and use it anytime that you get a yeast infection. If you already have one, then you use it like a suppository at night for three nights and it works that way, or you can take it orally to prevent you getting an infection. Here’s the scoop!
L-lysine will help keep your body in an alkaline state so that you don’t get a yeast infection. Take 1 (4 times) a day, breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime. Hope you feel better soon!

Just watch for signs of itching, swelling, foul odor, burning when you pee, and a white discharge. These are signs (not all-inclusive) of a common yeast infection. Really it’s no big deal, so don’t worry too much. The worst part is the itching.
I don’t understand why so many posters here say that antibiotics don’t cause yeast infections! It’s a proven fact that they do!!
At any rate, eat some yogurt, any kind you like. Yoplait has yummy choices. Just make sure it says “with live cultures” on it somewhere. Eating the yogurt will replace the good bacteria that the meds have taken away. This will PREVENT yeast infections, not cure it. If you do indeed end up getting one, call your doc OR try some otc stuff.
Also, make sure you use another form of birth control for a while, because antibiotics lessen the effectiveness of the bcp.
Good luck, and best wishes for good health!

The stronger the antibiotic the more likely you’ll get one. I’ve been taking Augmentin for the past week and this is the first time I’ve gotten one, and it’s TERRIBLE. I heard that if it’s penicillin it’s even MORE likely. But if you DO get one, then immediately go to your doctor and you can get pills for it, and it can go away in a couple days. I also heard something that using plain vanilla yogurt (I know, weird) can replace all the good bacteria down there, and it’ll make it go away very soon. Hope it helped!

Hi there. You get yeast infection when your body is run down. It has nothing to do with antibiotics. If anything, antibiotics is helping you.
Keep your underwear clean and dry, always, yeast grows on humid areas. Throw away old underwear periodically. Rest a lot!!!!!! Dont over-stress yourself or over-exert yourself. Use Canestan inserts (a medicine where u can buy at any drugstore) and u will be alright. Dont forget to keep the area dry and clean.

The antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria in your vagina, resulting in a yeast infection. You can eat yogurt with active cultures or take acidophilus capsules to try to prevent it.
Whatever you do, take the antibiotics. . . a yeast infection is easy to treat and cure and isn’t dangerous. . . but complications from strep throat can be really serious.

why would antibiotics cause a yeast infection?????????? its from unwashed hands. not pills. sheesh if for any reason you get one you go to walmart and get the medicine for it in the aisle with the pads and so on usually.
