Candidiasis refers to infection of the fungus Candida albicans, which is a type of yeast. Candida is a ubiquitous organism and yeast Candida infections can occur in various parts of the body including the skin, mucosa (tongue, vagina), the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, for example), the airways (bronchial tubes, for example) etc. Commonly, the infection is mild and limited to areas of moisture and maceration of the skin or mucous membranes, such as the walls of the vagina or groin, causing local inflammation, redness, itching and discharge white cheese . However, in rarer cases, the infection can become systemic (participation in the blood), causing sepsis and Candida endocarditis (infection of the heart). The term “thrush” is used to refer Candida infections of the skin and, more specifically, the mucous membranes. Oral candidiasis and vaginal candidiasis, for example, fungal infections of the mouth and the vaginal tract ( “the well-known yeast infection), respectively. This is in contrast to Candida infection of the esophagus, for example, be called “Candida esophagitis.” In an outpatient setting, the risk factors for Candida infection include being female on oral contraceptive drugs, antibiotics, chronic, or diabetes.
